Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of technology group Wärtsilä, has been contracted to supply the cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for six newbuild medium-sized gas carrier (MGC) vessels, which again strengthens the company's market-pioneering position in this sector. The new vessels are built at the Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui (YAMIC) Shipbuilding yard in China for a Japanese shipowner. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q3 2024. Wärtsilä’s cargo handling The ships will transport and operate with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The Wärtsilä solutions are designed to ensure the ships’ safe and efficient operation with LPG cargo and fuel. “We have worked closely with the YAMIC yard earlier, and we are pleased to continue this good relationship. This order is an important endorsement of the strong position that Wärtsilä’s cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems have established with this category of vessels,” commented Barry Yang, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, China. The YAMIC yard is a joint venture between Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding. The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard commencing in April 2025.

Cosco YP and Becker Marine Systems partnership Behind this successful cooperation is more than seven years of collaboration between Cosco YP and Becker Marine Systems. The partnership started with four ship sets and now encompasses over 60 complete ship sets and over 40 trunk sets of high-efficiency rudder systems. Customers include major shipyards of the COSCO group, Hudong, Jiangnan, Waigaoqiao, DSIC, GSIC, New Yangzi Group, among others. “For Cosco YP, receiving this award is a great honour and recognition of our work,” says Ran Hongbo, General Manager of Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment. Cooperation extended to Energy Saving Devices (ESD) Last year, the cooperation was also extended to the production of Energy Saving Devices (ESD). For this purpose, the workshop in Nantong was set up as one of the production sites for ESD. Both companies share a similar philosophy in terms of management, optimising their advantages, accepting differences, and striving for the highest customer satisfaction.
The steel-cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction of PIL's first 14,000 TEU container ship was held at Jiangnan Shipyard on the morning of 11 July. PIL CEO Lars Kastrup attended the ceremony to commemorate this significant milestone alongside representatives from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Jiangnan Shipyard. Both Mr. Kastrup and Deputy General Manager of Jiangnan Shipyard Hu Hongyu initiated the steel-cutting ceremony, which was followed by a signing ceremony between PIL, Jiangnan Shipyard, and ABS to officially kick off the construction work. Managing Director of PIL China Klaus Ku and General Manager of PIL Fleet Goh Chung Hun were also present at the event. Zero carbon emissions Mr Kastrup said at the ceremony, “It has been a number of years since PIL took delivery of new ships. Today, we resume our fleet renewal and expansion programme. This ship will be our first LNG dual-fueled container ship, and it represents our commitment to sustainability and our vision for a greener and cleaner future. This ship, along with her three sister ships, forms part of our strategy to decarbonize our fleet and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.” This ship will be our first LNG dual-fueled container ship, and it represents our commitment to sustainability" This order of four 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from Jiangnan Shipyard was announced by PIL in March 2022. All four ships will also be equipped with ammonia intermediate-ready fuel tank, and they will be progressively delivered from 2H 2024 through to 1H 2025. Sustainable shipping industry When delivered, the vessels will become the largest container vessels in PIL’s fleet and the first vessels in the fleet to run on LNG. This is in addition to the four 8,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships which we have ordered from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in July 2022, and will be delivered progressively in 2025. The construction of this new ship marks the start of PIL’s fleet renewal and revitalisation.
