WISTA's greener future for global shipping

Sustainable shipping and successes in diversity took centre stage at the inaugural WISTA India ExCo Conference in Mumbai, which coincided with the first WISTA International Mid-Term Meeting to take place in India. With WISTA International membership exceeding 6,000 this month, the Executive Committee (ExCo) met over two days to discuss topics that included the professional training programmes available to members and the upcoming report following the IMO/WISTA Women in Maritime Survey. How to drive the industry towards greener WISTA India ExCo Conference brought together the industry, consulates, and maritime pioneers Priority was also given to regional reports, while an in-depth review of the equity fund examined strategies to support National WISTA Associations (NWAs) in need. Entitled Navigating Change: The Future of Sustainable Shipping, the WISTA India ExCo Conference brought together local industry, consulates, maritime pioneers and professionals to share insights on how to drive the industry towards greener, more resilient maritime operations. Future for global shipping Addressing the conference, WISTA International President, Elpi Petraki, highlighted the way collaboration and greater diversity could help overcome industry challenges and create a more sustainable future for global shipping. "A collaborative spirit is essential to make the most of the opportunities that arise from the challenges we face," said Elpi Petraki. Maritime community  Elpi Petraki added: "Shipping brings together people from all around the world and has always included a wide range of cultures, nationalities and ethnicities. Diverse and global by nature, it demands versatility and collaboration every working day." Elpi Petraki continues, "It has taken thousands of years of collaboration to create the global maritime community we enjoy today. Even during trying times, therefore, we must not lose sight of the fact that it will be by working together that women will be most effective in driving the positive changes that benefit our global community." Key elements of the industry’s green transition WISTA India, Sanjam Gupta, said: "It was an honour to host the first WISTA India ExCo Conference and the WISTA International Executive Committee in Mumbai." Sanjam Gupta adds, "The conference provided an excellent opportunity to discuss key elements of the industry’s green transition while also showcasing India’s position as a sustainable shipping pioneer and many of the women who are driving change and contributing to the country’s swift transition to greener shipping operations." Key maritime stakeholder WISTA International ExCo visited the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy to discuss the programmes In a direct engagement with a key maritime stakeholder in India, the WISTA International ExCo visited the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy to discuss the programmes it has in place to support and attract more females to the seafaring profession. In touring the academy’s facilities, delegates made full use of opportunities to speak to many of the female cadets enrolled. Importance of a maritime hub Elpi Petraki adds, "As a major maritime hub, significant steps have been taken in India to educate the seafaring community about the importance of creating an inclusive and safe working environment onboard." Elpi Petraki continues, "Over 450 cadets graduate from the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy each year, and in the last year, the number of female cadets studying there has increased, showing the effort that is being made to create a more diverse and inclusive seafaring profession."

WISTA in India: Maritime sustainability focus

For the first time in history, the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) International Board will hold its mid-term meeting in India. This landmark event underscores WISTA's dedication to fostering diversity, inclusion, and leadership in the global maritime, trading, and logistics sectors. Transforming maritime operations To commemorate this historic occasion, WISTA India is hosting its first WISTA International EXCO Conference, titled "Navigating Change: The Future of Sustainable Shipping," on 9th April 2024. This conference will explore the maritime industry's critical challenges and opportunities, particularly in driving environmental sustainability. Pioneers, innovators, and professionals from around the globe will come together to discuss cutting-edge strategies, share insights, and collaborate on transforming maritime operations into greener, more resilient systems. Transitioning to sustainable shipping Professionals from around the globe will come together to discuss cutting-edge strategies Summiit Cheema Sharma, WISTA India President expressed her thoughts on the event, stating: "It is an honour and a privilege for WISTA India to be hosting its first WISTA International ExCo mid-term conference in India. India is the ideal venue for such an event, as the economy is swiftly transitioning to sustainable shipping by using renewable energy, alternative fuels, and other technologies to reduce emissions." "India has plans to set up a Maritime Development Fund to help manufacture green vessels and ports. It has already undertaken green shipping under government policies such as the National Biofuel Policy and Methanol Policy, so it is set to create a future that is sustainable and facilitates global seaborne trade." Future in global shipping Sharma added: “I am excited and look forward to welcoming our WISTA International ExCo Board Members, our overseas guests, speakers, and participants from all over India. We anticipate a memorable event, with rich insights, takeaways, and action plans for a sustainable future in global shipping." Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International, emphasised the significance of this event, stating: "India is a vibrant hub for the maritime industry, and it is an honour for the WISTA International Board to meet here for the first time." The conference serves as a platform to celebrate and amplify the pivotal role women play in shaping the future of maritime sustainability, while also charting a course for a more inclusive and greener industry.

WISTA International 2024 empowering women in shipping

WISTA International AGM and Conference 2024, which took place 9–11 October in Limassol, Cyprus, marked the association’s 50th anniversary with a memorable programme, three new national associations, the announcement of a new Equity Fund, and a broadening of objectives.  Bringing together over 350 delegates from all sectors of maritime, trading, and logistics, the event was notable for being the first WISTA conference attended by a national leader, with Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, delivering the first keynote address. Diversity and women’s leadership Highlighting the strong contribution shipping makes to the Cyprus economy, Christodoulides described gender equality as “an integral part of sustainable growth”, and WISTA’s mission to promote diversity and women’s leadership as “vital”. He also acknowledged that WISTA Cyprus had contributed to consultations behind his government’s National Strategy on Gender Equality 2024-2026. Shipping Deputy Minister Cyprus Marina Hadjimanolis, who was also among the speakers, will work with the Commissioner for Gender Equality on a new study of gender ratio, trends, needs, and challenges to crystallise future government action on equality and inclusion.  Keynote address He advocates not only in his words but also by refusing to speak on panels comprised solely of men In her speech, Hadjimanolis observed that the “WISTA family transcends beyond borders, nationalities or religion”. She commended “a force of passionate and dynamic women, working tirelessly for gender equality and the global empowerment of women in shipping." International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez offered an inspiring keynote, focusing on the need for shipping to demonstrate change, which he advocates not only in his words but by refusing to speak on panels comprised solely of men. WISTA’s recent growth WISTA International President Elpi Petraki described this as a “shining example of leadership that set a powerful precedent for others to follow”. In an uplifting and wide-ranging keynote, Petraki spoke of her pride regarding WISTA’s impressive recent growth, standing at 5,200 members globally, and explained how the association’s goals have evolved since its inception in 1974. She said, “Our initial aim to attract, support, and empower women in the maritime, trade, and logistics sectors remains at the heart of our mission, but now we have our sights set on broader objectives." DEI "In continuing to foster environments that uphold DEI, we contribute to the global push for sustainable shipping for the sake of future generations.” The broadening of its mission should not be mistaken for a change of direction, she emphasised. “We aim to build bridges that create synergies across all genders, ethnicities, and cultures. Our annual conferences are a celebration of our unity and achievements to date by the women, and men, who are driving change across the sector.” Empowerment of women in maritime Opening the WISTA International conference, Natalia Bury Loyal, President of WISTA Cyprus, said the event marked “half a century of empowering women in the maritime industry, championing diversity, and advancing equity in shipping and trade." "This is truly a moment for celebration, reflection, and looking forward to our shared future.” Conference agenda The potential for wider change across the sector was clear from a conference agenda which 2024 took as its theme Excellence in Maritime and International Trade Driven by Innovation and inspired a series of thought-provoking panel discussions. Highlights included Innovative Horizons: Pioneering Technologies Transforming the Maritime and Trade Industries, a panel on Anchoring Global Maritime and Trade Excellence - the Human Element at the Heart of Innovation, and a session titled Financing the Future, Navigating the Energy and Technology Transition in Maritime.  In a session titled Sea of Change: The Impact of Socioeconomic Turmoil and International Regulations on Innovation in Maritime and Trade, Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, also pointed to the 90,000-seafarer shortfall in the maritime workforce. National WISTA Associations The event officially welcomed three new National WISTA Associations (NWAs) to WISTA International, with the addition of representation from Honduras, China, and Costa Rica bringing the total number of member organisations to 62. WISTA International also formalised a new NWA Equity Fund to offer support to members in countries affected by financial or other challenges.
