APM returns to address the industry’s demand for sustainability, digitalisation, and innovation

Asia Pacific Maritime (APM), the largest meeting place in Southeast Asia for the global maritime value chain, will return for its 18th installment in Singapore from 13 to 15 March 2024 at the Marina Bay Sands.  The premier exhibition and conference is expected to bring together more than 14,000 shipowners, shipyards, ship management, and technical procurers to meet over 1,400 solutions providers.  Solutions and services “For the past few months, we have been reconnecting with industry players globally to learn about their latest solutions, services, and technologies that will drive the maritime sector over the next decade,” said Yeow Hui Leng, Group Project Director, RX, the organiser of APM. "Through APM, we are excited to be connecting these global brands with the Asian audience and bringing their offerings here to further support collaboration and growth. We look forward to cultivating a space for conversations and discussions that will future-proof the maritime sector.”  Decarbonisation efforts Maritime faces significant pressure to be more sustainable and innovative in this increasingly challenging world As an industry essential for the world’s economic development, maritime faces significant pressure to be more sustainable and innovative in this increasingly challenging world. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the maritime sector, which carries around 80% of the global merchandise trade currently, urgently needs to decarbonise, and these decarbonisation efforts need to come together with technological innovation, sound multilateral regulation, and economic growth to face rising costs, especially among the most vulnerable economies. Future of vessels, solutions for tomorrow  With the theme “Future of Vessels, Solutions for Tomorrow”, APM 2024 aims to be the platform for knowledge exchange and information sharing. The conference and exhibition will focus on highlighting smarter solutions to achieve net-zero objectives, drive cybersecurity, improve satellite communication mobility, and embrace digitalisation. Joining at the exhibition front will be innovative solutions including drones, batteries, electric marine engines and propulsion, sustainable paints and coatings, and tech solution companies, just to name a few. Maritime drones Flyability will also head a session at the APM conference to address the use of drones to enhance inspection Maritime drones are increasingly used for inspection in environments that are tough to navigate, such as engine rooms and ports, as they can help improve safety while keeping operational costs low. At APM 2024, attendees will be able to explore Flyability’s ELIOS 3, the world’s first collision-tolerant drone equipped with a LiDAR sensor for indoor 3 mapping. Flyability has pioneered confined space inspection drones that enable professionals to improve safety, reduce downtime, and cut costs for their internal inspections. Flyability will also head a session at the APM conference to address the use of drones to enhance inspection and surveillance for port operations.  Notable exhibitors Other notable exhibitors amongst the 1,400 pioneering brands on the floor include Wartsila, MTU, Niigata, Engtek, Reintjes, Schaller Automation, Yanmar, Daihatsu Diesel, Nakashima, Schottel, Bergen Engines, Yara Marine, Marlink, Speedcast, OTESAT_MARITEL, Hostmost, Jotron, KVH, Furuno, Tero Marine, Danaos, Jason Electronics, Codar, Can Traders, Alphatron, Nabtesco, Thuraya, Asia Satellite Telecommunications, Bachmann Electronic, Navtor, Auto-Maskin, VINSSEN, Vertidrive NL, Durapower, EST-Floattech, Hanla IMS, Panasia, Shinwoo, GEA, Lindenberg-Anlagen, Zollern GmbH, Flender, Thordon Bearings, Roxtec, Sauer Compressors, Fincantieri Italy, DESMI, Den-Jet, Damen Shipyard, Nippon Paint, Jotun, Chugoko Marine Paint and many more. Rolls-Royce announces the company has successfully tested mtu engines with pure hydrogen fuel

Rolls-Royce announces that it has conducted successful tests of a 12-cylinder gas variant of the mtu Series 4000 L64 engine running on 100% hydrogen fuel. The tests, carried out by the Power Systems business unit, showed very good characteristics in terms of efficiency, performance, emissions and combustion. These tests mark another important step towards the commercial introduction of hydrogen solutions to meet the demand of customers for more sustainable energy. Commercial introduction of hydrogen solutions This engine will serve the market demand for hydrogen solutions in the energy transition" Tobias Ostermaier, President – Stationary Power Solutions, Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems, explained “This engine will serve the market demand for hydrogen solutions in the energy transition and will be available to our customers as a reliable and clean power source for gensets and combined heat and power plants.” The first installation of mtu engines running on 100% hydrogen is already planned for the enerPort II lighthouse project in the German inland port of Duisburg, as part of the development of a climate-neutral energy supply for a new container terminal. Hydrogen - the central element of the energy transition Dr. Jörg Stratmann, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said “We see hydrogen as one of the central elements of the energy transition. It can be used for both storage of excess energy and as a fuel, not only for engines but fuel cells and cogeneration plants to generate climate-neutral electricity and heat.” In times of low demand and high renewable energy generation from wind or solar, for example, the excess energy can be channelled through an electrolyser to convert water to hydrogen, which can later be used as fuel in any number of applications. Rapid progress in efficiency, performance and clean combustion For several months, the mtu gas engine has been undergoing bench testing and continuous improvement in terms of efficiency, performance, emissions and combustion using 100 percent hydrogen as fuel. With green hydrogen, these mtu engines can be operated in a CO2-neutral manner in the future. For gas engines already installed, Rolls-Royce offers a conversion solution. Rapid progress in development of the hydrogen engine Andrea Prospero, an Engineer at Rolls-Royce responsible for the development of the hydrogen engine, said “We are very pleased with the rapid progress. The very low engine emissions are well below the strict EU limits, no exhaust gas after-treatment is required.” The development of the engine to use hydrogen was advanced quickly and efficiently Due to the different combustion behaviour of hydrogen compared to natural gas, some engine components including fuel injection, turbocharging, piston design and control, were modified in the test engine. However, by using proven technologies within the Power Systems’ portfolio, such as mtu turbochargers, injection valves, and engine electronics and control, the development of the engine to use hydrogen was advanced quickly and efficiently. First deployment for CO2-neutral power supply at Duisport Duisport, one of the world’s largest inland ports, is working with several partners to build a hydrogen-based supply network for its new terminal, ready for operation in 2024. In the future, most of the electricity required by the port itself will be generated directly on site from hydrogen in a CO2-neutral manner. This will be achieved by two combined heat and power plants with mtu Series 4000 hydrogen engines (with a total installed capacity of 2MW), as well as three mtu fuel cell systems (with a total installed capacity 1.5MW). Moving towards sustainable fuels and new technologies As part of its sustainability programme, Rolls-Royce is realigning the product portfolio of Power Systems towards more sustainable fuels and new technologies that can further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
