New Monna Lisa cuts 650 tonnes of CO2 emissions by choosing AkzoNobel's Intergard and Intersmooth coatings

International®, AkzoNobel’s marine coatings brand has announced that a new cable-laying vessel, the Monna Lisa, owned by Prysmian, is to be coated in the Intergard® 7500 primer and Intersmooth® 7465Si antifouling solution. This decision is estimated to reduce the vessel’s carbon emissions (CO2) by 672 tonnes over the dry docking period and lower Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) by more than 11 tonnes during construction. By utilising Intergard 7500, a high-solids universal primer solution, the shipyard can reduce VOC emissions during application and significantly decrease packaging by eliminating over 1,000 waste tins. Cost savings for shipowners Intergard 7500, an aluminium-containing pure epoxy yield, offers superior corrosion protection Intergard 7500, an aluminium-containing pure epoxy product, offers superior corrosion protection and abrasion resistance, leading to significant maintenance cost savings for shipowners compared to other modified epoxy universal primers, especially when applied during new building. Intersmooth 74765Si, the chosen fouling control solution, is a low friction self-polishing copolymer antifouling, which will keep a smooth clean hull in operation for the owner; minimising fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions.  New carbon targets Shipowners are facing increasing regulatory pressures to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) announcing new carbon targets for the fleet last year. International® and the owner reviewed different coating options and scenarios using the company’s Intertrac® Vision prediction tool to optimise and select the best scheme to deliver the optimal economic solution while maximising the sustainability benefits. Sustainability commitments Construction of the Monna Lisa is hoped to be ended and enter into service at the start of 2025 Prysmian states that the decision to choose both coatings for the vessel was to help meet its sustainability commitments during construction and operation.  The Monna Lisa will be the second new-build vessel owned by Prysmian that will be applied by coatings from International®, further reinforcing the partnership between the two companies and with the shipbuilder, Vard Group. Construction of the Monna Lisa is expected to be completed and enter into service at the beginning of 2025. Decarbonisation goals Primoz Pungartnik, Regional Commercial Director, Marine & Protective Coatings EMEA at AkzoNobel said: “As our customers continue to search for more sustainable solutions to help meet their decarbonisation goals, we are pleased to officially introduce our high-performing, universal primer, Intergard 7500 solution to the European market. This has a volume of solids of 80 percent and VOC of 298g/lt, which is 17 percent higher solids and 37 percent less VOC than the previously used primer."  “Now in the European market, the Monna Lisa will be the first of many vessels to choose Intergard 7500 as shipyards look to reduce their environmental footprint, while increasing overall shipyard productivity whilst ship owners look to reduce through-life maintenance costs. We are grateful to our partners at Prysmian and Vard Group for placing their continued trust in International® Marine Coatings.”  Setting new benchmarks Leoni Davide, New Building Vessel Manager at Prysmian, said: “The selection of marine coatings is one of the several areas where the Monna Lisa is setting new benchmarks in terms of environmental footprint." "Thanks for the good collaboration with AkzoNobel and Vard Group, we at Prysmian are proud to introduce Intergard 7500 to the European market with our Monna Lisa vessel.”

Port signs 10-year partnership with Italian offshore wind giant

AV Dawson, owner and operator of Port of Middlesbrough, has signed a long-term partnership with Italian offshore cable manufacturer, Prysmian.  The Italian firm, which has been a tenant at Port of Middlesbrough for several years, has signed a 10-year agreement, cementing a long-term partnership, in preparation for its future growth. Part of the new partnership deal Prysmian, which is a world pioneer in the manufacture and installation of subsea and offshore wind cables, first started using the Port of Middlesbrough ten years ago. At that time, operations on site were little more than a container or two of equipment being held in storage. Operations on site were little more than a container or two of equipment being held in storage Over the years, as the offshore wind industry has exploded and Prysmian has secured more contracts, Port of Middlesbrough has become central to the company’s operations and now acts as its northern European marine base. With further growth anticipated, Prysmian has secured additional warehousing and office space at the port as part of the new partnership deal. This will support further expansion, accommodating new teams and new jobs in the region. Northeast England’s offshore wind sector Charlie Nettle, AV Dawson’s group managing director said: “We have great relationships with the Prysmian team and a real partnership approach between us – we are thrilled that Prysmian wants to continue to call Port of Middlesbrough its home. This new agreement is hugely positive news, not only for Teesside but for the whole of Northeast England’s offshore wind sector. It really puts Port of Middlesbrough and the wider region on the map." “The region has become a hot spot for offshore wind, and it will only get busier as businesses, and the world, continues on the journey to net-zero.” Prysmian’s growth ambitions Prysmian is also investing in new vessels to support this growth trajectory Prysmian is also investing in new vessels to support this growth trajectory. These vessels will be regular callers at Port of Middlesbrough, collecting offshore wind cable and equipment, to mobilise for offshore wind projects all over the world. To support Prysmian’s growth ambitions, AV Dawson has put significant investment into its port and quayside facilities so it can accommodate these new vessels. Net-zero ambitions Charlie continued: “We were really excited to prepare for the arrival of the Leonardo Da Vinci (LDV). She is the largest cable-laying vessel of her type, in the world, so we needed to ensure we had the capacity on our berths to accommodate her. This involved dredging wider berth pockets as the LDV is five metres wider than any of our other customers’ vessels. Thankfully, the Monna Lisa is the sister ship to the LDV, so the dimensions of the vessel are the same. However, Prysmian and some of our other customers are now enquiring about shore power to support their net-zero ambitions, so that is the next significant investment to plan for.” Charlie added: “Seeing these huge vessels coming into our port is also fantastic for our colleagues and the local community to witness. It suddenly makes the river and all the activity happening on it, much more visible for people. I feel this increases a sense of pride and progress among people and may also inspire some young people into a career in the shipping and logistics industry.” State-of-the-art facilities Peter Watson, responsible for the overall management of Prysmian’s marine base said: “Having a base in Northeast England is imperative to the success of the many projects we are delivering right now and the ones we can see coming down the pipeline." “Port of Middlesbrough is strategically positioned, has well-connected transport links and offers state-of-the-art facilities, making it an ideal place to expand our current operations. However, our decision to be here is as much about the working relationship we have. Everyone knows what we’re trying to achieve and just works brilliantly together to make it happen. This contract cements our commitment to the port and the town, as we look forward to the future and the exciting developments that are coming over the next few years.”
