Orbital Marine Power and Global Energy Group sign preferred supplier agreement

Orbital Marine Power (Orbital), the renewable energy company focused on the commercial deployment of its innovative floating tidal turbine technology, has selected Global Energy Group as preferred supplier to lead the manufacture and assembly of turbines for the company’s initial Orkney projects which have secured contracts under the UK Government’s Contract for Difference auction rounds 4 and 5. Turbine manufacture It is anticipated that turbine manufacture will start at Global Energy Group’s Port of Nigg facility on the Cromarty Firth, later in 2024 with first power expected from the Orkney connected projects in 2026. These projects will build on the success of Orbital’s O2, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine. Reducing CO2 emissions Orbital expects to demonstrate an unparalleled level of UK job creation on a per MW basis Located off the Orkney coast, it was launched and started operation in 2021, offsetting around 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, and powering 1,700 UK homes while creating high value jobs within the local economy over the course of its operational life. In keeping with the company’s vision of using a predominantly UK based supply chain for the manufacture and installation of its tidal projects, Orbital expects to demonstrate an unparalleled level of UK job creation on a per MW basis with the delivery of its CfD projects. Tidal stream energy Andrew Scott, CEO of Orbital Marine Power, said, “Orbital is committed to ensuring tidal stream energy can make a complementary and material contribution to the UK’s decarbonising ambitions while also supporting a just transition by creating a new industrial sector led from the UK and our home in Scotland." "The selection of Global Energy Group is a significant step towards that vision.” Multi-technology approach Iain Sinclair, Executive Director at Global Energy Group, said, “We are delighted to have been selected by the Orbital team as their preferred supplier for the manufacture and assembly of their innovative floating tidal technology."  "This is a real vote of confidence in our people and the integrated capability at the Port of Nigg. Importantly, it further demonstrates our commitment towards delivering a high quality, cost-competitive, localised value proposition, for the multi-technology approach required for the successful decarbonisation of the UK’s energy sector.”

Orbital Marine Power and Eauclaire Tidal partner to unlock Canadian tidal stream opportunity

Orbital Marine Power, the renewable energy company focused on the development and global deployment of its pioneering floating tidal stream turbine technology, has been named as Euclaire Tidal’s technology partner at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE). The agreement covers one 2.4MW O2X machine to be deployed on the FORCE facility in the fast flowing waters of the Minas Passage. Powerful tidal turbine Subject to the required regulatory approvals, Orbital’s floating tidal stream technology, has been confirmed as the device that can be deployed, subject to the required regulatory approvals, following a licence transfer and technology change by Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (NRR), signed earlier this year. The final timing of deployment will be confirmed after a Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) assessment process has been completed, this was recently initiated with the submission of a project Request for Review. The company’s first O2 machine is deployed in the waters off Orkney, and it has been exporting electricity as the world’s most powerful tidal turbine to the UK grid since July 2021. It completed operational financing in 2022 and is expected to offset around 2,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and power 1,700 homes, while creating and sustaining high value jobs within the local economy over the course of its operational life. International project opportunity FORCE is a world class facility and the tidal stream resource in the Bay of Fundy" Andrew Scott, CEO, at Orbital said: “We are pleased to take these first steps towards working with Eauclaire Tidal on Orbital’s first international project opportunity. FORCE is a world class facility and, if a clear regulatory and long-term licencing process can be established, the tidal stream resource in the Bay of Fundy represents a significant opportunity to decarbonise the Nova Scotia energy system and provide clean, predictable power more widely.” Jane Lowrie at Eauclaire said: “FORCE is a world class facility and the tidal stream resource in the Bay of Fundy represents a significant opportunity to decarbonise the Nova Scotia energy system. The O2 floating tidal stream turbine is the ideal technology to deploy as we work together to fulfil FORCE’s potential to be a net export of clean power to Nova Scotian households and businesses.” Lindsay Bennett at FORCE said: “It’s exciting to see Orbital seeking to deploy in Nova Scotia waters and find another partner to help cut emissions and fight the impacts of climate change. We look forward to working with the O2 team on their first North American project and supporting their successful deployment.”

Orbital Marine Power awarded 2 further CfDs as part of UK Government renewable energy auction

Orbital Marine Power Ltd, the renewable energy company focused on the deployment of its pioneering floating tidal turbine, has been awarded 2 Contracts for Difference (CfDs) for 7.2MW in the UK Allocation Round 5 (AR5) process. This builds on Orbital’s success in the previous year’s Allocation Round 4, where it secured contracts for 7.2MW of capacity.  7.2MW predictable clean energy The CfDs will allow Orbital to expand its development of projects in Orkney with the construction of 6 turbines covered by the Contracts for Difference scheme. Capable of delivering a total of 7.2MW of predictable clean energy to the grid, these additional turbines will be able to power up to 9000 homes, supporting the UK’s security of supply, energy transition, and broader climate change objectives. Accelerating industrialisation Orbital’s ability to manufacture with an excess of 75% UK supply content shows the UK has significant capability This positive outcome also means Orbital can make a significant investment in the UK supply chain as it sets about establishing series production of its innovative technology. Orbital’s ability to manufacture with an excess of 75% UK supply content shows the UK has significant capability and the expertise to create a supply chain that has a clearer route to accelerating industrialisation and scale through volume production. Valuable supply chain Andrew Scott, CEO of Orbital Marine Power, said, “This latest award creates more clarity for us and our supply chain about our immediate ambitions, allowing us to build on our progress to date. Securing these latest CfDs is another key step on a path that ends with clean predictable power being delivered to thousands of UK households and businesses, alongside building factories of the future and creating sustainable, green jobs at a ratio that hasn’t been achieved in the renewable space before." “We maintain our commitment to establishing a valuable supply chain within the UK. Maximising the benefits and rewards from this endeavour will take leadership and long-term commitment from the UK Government.”
