Technology group Wärtsilä will supply a fully integrated, mechanical drive, propulsion package for new 6000 dwt LNG-fuelled tankers being built for British fleet operator, James Fisher Everard Ltd., part of the James Fisher group of companies. The ships are under construction by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng Co. in cooperation with design consultant FKAB Marine Design. The integrated package includes the high-performance Wärtsilä 25DF dual-fuel main engine. Wärtsilä booked the order in Q2 2024. Low-emissions fleet Under increasing pressure to reduce emissions, tanker owners are exploring solutions that will support the decarbonisation of their fleet and offer improved fuel economy, lower emissions, and flexibility in fuelling choices. Wärtsilä’s 25DF engine can support these ambitions, helping customers to deliver an efficient and low-emissions fleet. Sustainable shipping operations Krystyna Tsochlas, Head of Maritime Transport for James Fisher, says, “We are committed to a new, more sustainable future for our shipping operations and Wärtsilä’s expertise in delivering innovative propulsion solutions has been demonstrated throughout the vessel design development process. The dual-fuel engine will help us serve our customer needs more efficiently and less carbon-intensively.” Tsochlas continues, “The Wärtsilä 25DF engine offers a modular, upgradeable, and flexible design that will help to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions, improving the efficiency of the new tankers, and facilitating the adoption of sustainable fuels.” Ease of use and situational awareness The company will supply an integrated SCR system, a GVU, a gearbox, and a CPP, with seals and bearings In addition to the Wärtsilä 25DF engine, the company will supply an integrated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, a gas valve unit (GVU), a gearbox, and controllable pitch propeller (CPP), with seals and bearings. Included in the scope, Wärtsilä’s recently updated remote propulsion control system, featuring an enhanced ProTouch system, will improve ease of use and situational awareness for navigators and chiefs. Fleet future-proofing “Fleet future-proofing is of utmost importance for operators today as the industry transforms towards optimal efficiencies and decarbonised operations,” comments Stefan Nysjö, Vice President of Power Supply, Wärtsilä Marine. "The selection of our propulsion package, centered around the Wärtsilä 25DF engine, is a clear indication of how James Fisher is looking for suppliers with a strong focus on research and development, and who offer technological competence, systems integration capabilities, and in-service support for all elements of the package." Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to take place during 2025.
James Fisher, a global provider of innovative marine solutions and specialised engineering services, has signed a charter agreement with Go Marine Group for the exclusive use of the multi-purpose service vessel, Go Electra, adding much needed security for customers, amid cost and supply chain crunches in the industry. The agreement will see the boat used, throughout the remainder of 2022, by James Fisher’s marine group brands, James Fisher Renewables (JF Renewables) and James Fisher Subtech (JF Subtech). James Fisher – Go Marine Group agreement The long-standing agreement will see quicker response times and tailored health and safety standards implemented The long-standing agreement will see quicker response times and tailored health and safety standards implemented, as well as stabilised and reliable day rates for customers. In addition, there will be an increase in operational uptime, with a consistent crew and shortened mobilisation and demobilisation times between projects resulting in boosted productivity and sustainability due to fewer overall transits to shore. Go Electra multi-purpose service vessel Putting sustainability and efficiency at the forefront of decision making, James Fisher selected the Go Electra multi-purpose service vessel, following an extensive vessel research and evaluation process. The Go Electra vessel was built in 2011 and measures at around 80 metre in length, with DP2 capabilities. It also has an onboard capacity for 66 crew and passengers. Vessel mobilised in and around UK waters With an established North Sea operating record, the Go Electra will be mobilised in and around UK waters, largely on unexploded ordnance identification, with remotely-operated vehicles (ROV), IMR activities and air diving projects, core services for both James Fisher Renewables and James Fisher Subtech. The vessel will be configured with a fully integrated, hanger-deployed WROV and Observation Class ROV and the added flexibility of switching between a 3rd ROV and Air Diving Spread. Commitment to UK offshore and North Sea energy sector We delighted to have secured the Go Electra for the season, enabling us to not only lock-in day rates from the offset" Paula Crosby, the Head of Tendering - JF Renewables and Subtech, at James Fisher, said “A seasonal charter like this is a first for James Fisher and signifies our commitment to the UK offshore and North Sea energy sector, following several difficult years for the industry, due to price and supply chain complications, compounded by COVID-19.” Paula Crosby adds, “We’re delighted to have secured the Go Electra for the season, enabling us to not only lock-in day rates from the offset, but also offer expedited mobilisation and pass on cost efficiencies for our customers. 2022 is set to be one of our busiest years yet, so it was really important to us to ensure that we’ve got the best set up for our operations over the coming months.” Enhanced security and stability in operation The charter will provide JF Renewables and James Fisher Subtech customers with increased security and stability in operation, allowing for increased productivity and the acceleration of projects that will support the industry’s growth through a hastening energy transition. John Ewen, the Assets and Operations Director - JF Subtech, at James Fisher, commented “The Go Electra is the ideal vessel for our project backlog this year and really cements our position in the market, by allowing us to be agile, reactive and competitive, with the flexibility to cover both Air Diving & ROV campaigns, and continue to commit to our sustainability goals, across the renewables and subsea sectors. Coupled with our knowledgeable crews and long-standing expertise for the extremes, 2022 is already looking to be a great year!” The news follows JF Renewables’ completion of phase one of UXO identification at RWE’s Sofia Offshore Windfarm in 2021, with the Go Electra earmarked for use on phase two from May 2022. The Go Electra will be mobilised by JF Renewables and James Fisher Subtech, part of James Fisher, in March 2022, with opportunity for use by other James Fisher group companies, throughout the year.
