Wison Engineering Ltd. (abbr. as Wison) signed EPC contract with Shanghai WaiGaoQiao 3# power generation Co., LTD (abbr. as 3# Power Plant) for its first CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol demo project recently, with the methanol production scale of 10 kta.

This project marks the successful implementation of Wison’s first EPC project in the field of carbon neutrality by using chemical adsorption and hydrogenation of 100% carbon dioxide from flue gas of coal-fired power plants to produce bulk chemical methanol.

First CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol demo project

This project is a crucial supporting project of ‘Carbon Neutrality Joint Laboratory’ built by SHENERGY and East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), and is also the first industrial scale demo project of 100% carbon dioxide hydrogenation to methanol in Shanghai, China.

The project site is located in the reserved land in the 3# Power Plant, which is the only gold medal award ‘National Coal Power Energy Conservation and emission Reduction Demonstration Base’ by the National Energy Administration.

100% carbon dioxide hydrogenation

Small part of the flue gas discharged is used for the raw gas of this project

Small part of the flue gas discharged is used for the raw gas of this project, and carbon dioxide in the exhaust gas is captured and enriched by chemical absorption process. Methanol is synthesized by using high-efficient hydrothermal resistant catalyst that can adapt to 100% carbon dioxide hydrogenation. This project is also graded utilises the low grade heat energy of the plant.

By the application of the above technologies, the project realises the multi-technology coupling of carbon capture in low-concentration power plant flue gas and carbon dioxide synthesis to methanol, which makes a way of replicable and sustainable technical route for the power industry to carry out deep carbon dioxide emission reduction and produce methanol products that has multiple properties, such as chemical raw materials, fuels, hydrogen carriers and energy storage media as well.

National ‘dual carbon’ strategy

It will also play a role of social and economic demonstration effect positively for promoting the ‘organic’ connection between power industry with chemical industry, helping build a green low-carbon/negative carbon energy security system and cross-industry carbon neutrality.

In recent years, Wison has firmly anchored the national ‘dual carbon’ strategy in the field of new energy, based on the development opportunities of ‘hydrogen economy’ and ‘carbon economy’, by aiming at providing innovative solutions and engineering plus technical services for global customers in the fields of green hydrogen, green ammonia, green/electric methanol, sustainable jet fuel, and continuously increased strategic input.

Establishment of ‘new-type energy system’

They are striving to build a good ‘circle of friends’ with upstream power generation enterprises, power design institutes, chemical technology licensors and equipment manufacturers, by taking multiple measures of technical scheme, R&D and project execution, for the purpose of solid technical reserve to serve the establishment of ‘new-type energy system’ and the company’s long-term development with green, health and sustainability.
