To help achieve the required IMO regulatory standards on efficiency levels, the Finnish shipping company - Langh Ship Oy Ab opted for WE Tech Solutions’ permanent magnet shaft generator solution for their three new 1200 TEU container feeder ships. The ships will be built by PaxOcean Engineering (Zhoushan) Co., Ltd in China and will be utilised for container traffic in Europe after their delivery.

The design for the container ships has been developed by Langh Ship in collaboration with the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI). The ships are optimised for carrying 45-foot containers in the holds and on deck. The ships will be approximately 150 metres long, 27 metres wide and have a draft of 8.75 metres. They will be built to Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A.

As a result of the lower fuel consumption, the attained Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) will also improve for the ships

WE Tech’s permanent magnet shaft generator solution can generate electricity for all the systems onboard the ships without needing to run auxiliary generating sets.

The fuel consumption will be significantly reduced because the shaft generator is driven by the 2-stroke main engine, which has considerably lower specific fuel consumption compared to auxiliary engines. As a result of the lower fuel consumption, the attained Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) will also improve for the ships.

Future-proofed solution

The solution from WE Tech Solutions is designed to be future-proof and can be upgraded with batteries and a shore connection for emission-free stays at harbours in the future. The solution includes efficient power distribution to the bow thruster, allowing for further savings in CAPEX and OPEX.

WE Tech’s solution is well known in the shipping industry for its economic and environmental benefits. We look forward to collaborating with WE Tech Solutions on this project, utilising the latest innovations to optimise our ships’ operation and to minimise energy consumption without losing any speed,” says Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, Managing Director of Langh Ship.

WE Tech – Lang Ship partnership

Laura Langh-Lagerlöf adds, “At Langh Ship, we are committed to taking the environment into consideration in all our operations. Together with WE Tech Solutions, we can contribute more to zero-emission shipping.

It is worth mentioning that Langh Ship’s sister company - Langh Tech will deliver the Carbon Capture System (CCS), the hybrid scrubber and the ballast water management system (LanghBW System) to the new vessels.

Enhancing energy efficiency of the vessels

We are looking forward to further improving the energy efficiency of these vessels together with Langh Tech"

We are looking forward to further improving the energy efficiency of these vessels together with Langh Tech. The hybrid scrubber, carbon capture and BWMS delivered by Langh Tech all need electrical power, and WE Tech Solutions can ensure the electrical power required for these systems will be generated in the most efficient way,” says Martin Andtfolk, Sales Manager of WE Tech Solutions.

Martin Andtfolk adds, “We are proud of this cooperation where we will accelerate innovation and decarbonisation in the container shipping segment together.
