Valenciaport has participated in the III International Forum on Marine Litter and Circular Economy – MARLICE 2024, held in the Veles e Vents building in the city of València, from 22 to 24 May 2024.

Specifically, the participation of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has focused on the session ‘Tourism and marine litter: strategies for a positive impact’. In it, the need to train and raise awareness among employees of tourism companies – shipping and hotel companies, among others – on circular economy and recycling, while at the same time raising awareness among tourists, was discussed.

Other treatment in specialised works

Most common waste resulting from the normal operations of the ship that are recycled

Francesca Antonelli, head of Marketing and Cruises at Valenciaport, described the actions carried out by cruise ships to promote the circular economy and the recycling of waste generated on board.

Food, domestic and operational waste, plastics, cargo waste, cooking oil or fishing gear, among others, are the most common waste resulting from the normal operations of the ship that are recycled and reused on board or sorted for further treatment in specialised plants.

Innovative technology

Antonelli also detailed some of the answers shipping companies are giving to make the voyages their ships undertake more sustainable. Alternative fuels, advanced water purification and treatment systems, low-friction coatings, innovative technology that increases the efficiency of ships and specific systems to protect marine life are some of them.

In parallel to the forum, a photography exhibition related to the main theme of the forum can be visited in the Clock Building of the Port Authority of València.
