Over the last three months, Cammell Laird has been undertaking the conversion of RFA Proteus, formally known as Topaz Tangaroa.

The offshore support vessel was purchased by the UK Ministry of Defence earlier in 2023 for conversion for Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS).

Crane and deck machinery

Cammell Laird has been tasked with preparing the vessel for its new role, with works to the crane and deck machinery as well as a full paint scheme and name change.

RFA Proteus is the newest member of Cammell Laird’s RFA cluster – joining the In-Service Support contract with the Ministry of Defence.

Underwater surveillance

David McGinley, Chief Executive Officer, said, "Cammell Laird was delighted to welcome the newest member of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary's flotilla."

He adds, "RFA Proteus will deliver vital underwater surveillance and safeguard critical seabed warfare infrastructure. We wish RFA Proteus and her crew the very best as she embarks on her future endeavours."
