Fleet Line Shipping is a Dubai-based logistics company and market leader in handling project cargo. Their expertise lies in handling Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) or Out of Gauge Cargo (OOG cargo), owning in-house assets like a fleet of transport, ISO & QHSE certified lashing services, lifting equipment, and more in and out of the UAE.

They have been an active partner of Maersk for 15 years, and we have together transported several Oversized Cargo and Breakbulk shipments across GCC.

The challenge

Before working with Maersk, Fleet Line never had a partner to offer tailor-made solutions basis their ODC transport requirements.

Fleet line wanted a partner to provide custom routings across the world

They wanted a partner with capabilities to provide custom routings across the world, a wide range of equipment availability, and solutions to handle and execute complex Oil & Gas shipments as per the ODC consignment requirements.

The Maersk solution

Together, we handled several heavy shipments and over-dimensional loads for Fleet Line. However, a challenging special cargo project was the handling of one of the most extreme OOG shipments in Flat Rack containers. Instead of moving the cargo on breakbulk, we planned it as OOG.

To handle this over the length and over height special cargo of a skid trailer with freight dimensions of 12.30 L x 2.67 W x 4.16 H meters 26 tons, we offered an OOG solution by making sure the cargo is lashed in a way to keep all the four corner castings free. This ensured that we could handle the shipment as OOG and seek approvals from all the transshipment origin and destination terminals on the acceptance and confirmed handling of the cargo.

What’s worth noting is that all this was made possible when manpower challenges at Port Said terminal was at its peak during the COVID-19 contingency.

The result

  • By moving their shipment on an OOG container instead of breakbulk, Fleet Line was able to
  • Save more than USD 10000/piece
  • Experience a shorter transit of 21.5 days as opposed to the market’s standard 25+ days transit to Onne
  • Execute this shipment on time and despite the contingencies
  • Deliver cost-effective weekly sailings in comparison to breakbulk operators with monthly or bi-monthly sailings

Over-dimensional cargo expertise

Fleet Line aims to partner with Maersk to offer end-to-end oversized cargo solutions to its end customers "People matter the most, and with Maersk, we found an excellent partner with over-dimensional cargo expertise that listens to our ideas and proactively implements them, creating a win-win situation that ultimately benefits our customers," said, Peter K. Mathew, Managing Director, Fleet Line Shipping Services LLC.
