GEM elettronica has introduced a new OLYMPUS solid state radar system for coastal surveillance, maritime traffic control, and airport surface monitoring. This newly developed X-band radar fully meets all the Levels of Radar Detection, recommended by the latest IALA V-128 Guidelines for Coastal surveillance and VTS applications.

It can be delivered in Basic, Standard or Advanced configurations compliant IALA N.1111 Guideline to meet virtually any customer requirement. The high-discrimination Antenna Unit, developed and produced in house, has been designed for missions demanding high-efficiency operation, extreme rotation performance against wind gusts, strength and durability in harsh environmental conditions.

High detection performance

Olympus X-band radar provides high detection performance with unique and outstanding capabilities, utilising the availability of new Solid State technologies and high-speed processor that enables fast processing and enhanced performance. The innovative Transmitter/Receiver with High Dynamic Range and Software-Defined Functionality includes video processing techniques such as Frequency Diversity, Time Diversity, CFAR and Doppler Filtering.

The pedestal is equipped with a direct drive system with an innovative coaxial torque motor allowing direct antenna rotating; this eliminates any kinematic chains and fostering remarkable improvements of performances and very high accuracy of angular detection providing true zero-backlash performance.

This makes the antenna group fully noiseless and maintenance and wear-free. The operator can remotely stop the rotation of the antenna in any position as set. There is also a mechanical lock of the antenna allowing performing local maintenance operations in full safety and, as option, a comprehensive de-icing kit in case of operation in polar and sub-polar environments.

Adverse environmental conditions

It can be delivered in Up-mast Configuration. Single or Dual Redundant or Frequency Diversity Mast-Mounted or Down-mast Configuration. Its latest generation Solid State Power Amplifier (SSPA) can deliver different levels of transmitted power up to 400 W. The radar has been designed and built to operate reliably 24 hours all year around, with full operational performances even in the most adverse environmental conditions. The calculated intrinsic system availability is more than 99%.

Easy maintenance is an important feature of Olympus. OLYMPUS Radar System is tailored for professional customers such as Coast Guard, Port and Airport Authorities, Oil & Gas Company.

  • Next GEM elettronica announces the successful Installation and Acceptance Testing of the 3D Columbus Radar on board of the Italian Navy Ship Vulcano.
