GEM elettronica is proud to announce the conclusion of a strategic project to strengthen Lithuania’s defense capabilities, during which cutting-edge surveillance radars with airspace monitoring function were installed on four patrol ships of the Lithuanian Navy.

The contract was executed successfully and within the agreed-upon timelines, thanks to the collaboration between the Italian defence companies Leonardo and GEM elettronica.

Advanced radar system

The heart of the system is the Columbus MK2 3D multi-mission radar developed and produced in house by GEM Elettronica, specially designed for coastal surveillance and naval applications, made with the latest technologies, which guarantee high detection performances for search and tracking of small and fast targets at both air and sea surface space, high reliability and availability with low maintenance and life cycle costs.

It is a compact and lightweight advanced radar system for short- and medium-range detection performing all the functions of surveillance, self-defence, IFF capabilities and weapon designation. The new radar systems were installed on the Lithuanian Flyvefisken (Standard Flex 300) class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) Žemaitis (P11), Dzūkas (P12), Aukštaitis (P14) and Sėlis (P15).

Working effectively together

The main role of the new equipment is to ensure the safety of ships when navigating in narrow passages

The main role of the new equipment is to ensure the safety of ships when navigating in narrow passages (e.g., straits, port channels) and in the open sea, as well as in search and rescue missions. The systems will allow objects to be detected up to 100 kilometers away.

The Commander of the Lithuanian Naval Forces Sea, Captain Giedrius Premeneckas underlined: “The successful implementation of this project represents a significant step in strengthening the capabilities of the Navy’s patrol vessels and significantly increasing our ability to carry out assigned tasks and work effectively together with NATO allies.”

The President of GEM elettronica Ing. Antonio Bontempi answered “We are delighted to have successfully contributed to the realization of this strategic project. We are also proud of what achieved by our R&D and Production teams who worked together with passion and tenacity to ensure the project was achieved within the expected timescales.”
