Get an up-close look at how one of the world’s cutting-edge seaports operates while setting an industry-pioneering example in the fight against climate change at the second-annual Green Port Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 7.

Free event at Long Beach

The free event at Harry Bridges Memorial Park, 1126 Queens Highway in Long Beach, will feature the new “clean machines” of cargo movement, interactive environmental information booths, children’s activities, and music and dance groups.

Food trucks will have meals available for purchase, and a beer and wine garden will have beverages for sale. No-cost harbour tours are available for the first 600 attendees to sign up at the event–no advance reservations are accepted.

Green Treat Trail entertainment

The U.S. Coast Guard will also conduct a helicopter rescue and safety demonstration

The public is invited to spend the afternoon in the Port, enjoying family-friendly displays, an Aquarium of the Pacific touch tank, a “Green Treat Trail,” entertainment including local cover band Knyght Ryder, Gregg Young and the 2nd Street Band, a fireboat demonstration, and numerous opportunities to learn more about one of the nation’s most important economic engines as it works toward becoming the world’s first zero-emissions port. The U.S. Coast Guard will also conduct a helicopter rescue and safety demonstration.

The Port of Long Beach has proven time and again that it is the worldwide pioneer in emission reductions and seaport sustainability,” said Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero. “We welcome the community to the Green Port Fair to learn about how we’ve created programs, built projects and advanced zero-emissions technologies to improve the environment and show the global shipping industry a more sustainable way to do business.”

Zero-emissions trucks

The origin of the ‘Green Port’ was a promise to safeguard the health of our community,” said Long Beach Harbour Commission President Bobby Olvera Jr. “We’re excited for the public to get to see the progress we’ve made and what we have planned for the future.”

The nation’s largest facility designed to support the assembly of offshore wind turbines

Green Port Fair attendees can find out about the Port’s commitment to having a zero-emissions cargo-handling equipment fleet by 2030, and zero-emissions trucks by 2035. Port staff will also be on hand to explain how Pier Wind, the nation’s largest facility designed to support the assembly of offshore wind turbines, will help California and the nation meet renewable energy targets in the coming decades, and how “America’s Green Gateway”–the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility–will improve the environment even as trade grows.

Sustainable transportation

Free parking for the event is available in two locations: at the Queen Mary parking lot adjacent to the fair site, and also at the Pike Outlets Parking Garage at Shoreline Drive and Chestnut Place, where shuttles will transport visitors to and from the fair.

Attendees are encouraged to reach the fair using sustainable transportation. A no-cost bike valet will be available at the fair site and visitors can also take a free passport bus to the event from downtown Long Beach.
