Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have emerged as significant priorities within the maritime industry's pursuit of sustainability. However, the industry's genuine commitment to embracing diversity, particularly concerning sexuality and gender, remains a topic of exploration.
LGBTQ+: Beyond acronyms
The LGBTQ+ community, comprising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer individuals and many other inclusive identities, has long fought for societal acceptance. Historical taboos, social stigma, and even legal repercussions have hindered their rightful place in society.
While international organisations and corporations have generally become more supportive
While international organisations and corporations have generally become more supportive, acceptance levels fluctuate across regions and workplaces. It is essential to acknowledge the existence of "rainbow capitalism," or "Rainbow Washing" where organisations adopt a facade of LGBTQ friendliness but perpetuate oppressive and discriminatory practices within their operations or through financial associations.
Diversity unveiled
The maritime industry, renowned for its global nature, has inherently fostered diversity. Throughout history, individuals from diverse backgrounds and beliefs have collaborated to transport goods across the seas. However, achieving genuine diversity extends beyond mere demographic representation.
True diversity necessitates inclusion and equity, intertwining these three principles. In addition to racial diversity, a truly diverse crew includes individuals representing various genders. Creating an environment that values and provides equal growth and advancement opportunities for all is crucial.
Challenges for LGBTQ+ maritime professionals and seafarers
Celebrating the unique views and grants of every individual is the ultimate goal
LGBTQ+ individuals face specific challenges within the shipping industry, highlighting the need to protect the rights of all seafarers. It is imperative to create an environment that enables LGBTQ+ maritime professionals to work without fear of discrimination or mistreatment, allowing them to express their authentic selves at work.
Promoting gender equality and ensuring that all voices are heard and respected, regardless of race, gender, or any other characteristic, are vital components of fostering true diversity within the industry. Celebrating the unique perspectives and contributions of every individual is the ultimate goal.
The importance of protecting LGBTQ+ individuals
The International Seafarers' Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has reported a significant surge in seafarers reporting instances of abuse, bullying, harassment, and discrimination. The alarming increase of nearly 50% during the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter sheds light on the urgent need for enhanced welfare and support within the maritime industry.
Prolonged exposure to bullying and harassment can have severe repercussions on an individual's mental health. What may be perceived as harmless jokes to some can deeply hurt others. The combination of bullying, harassment, and feelings of isolation can lead to exclusion, desperation, and even self-harm among seafarers.
Implementing DEI policies and agendas
LGBT-friendly control culture is pivotal in setting an inclusive and easy work setting
Creating an LGBT-friendly management culture is pivotal in establishing an inclusive and tolerant work environment. Such an environment not only fosters diversity and equality but also aids in the recruitment and retention of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Enacting policies that protect LGBTQ+ workers from discrimination and offering resources such as employee resource groups can enhance their well-being and professional development. Both onshore and onboard management should adopt clear principles that unequivocally condemn any form of discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals. Additionally, mechanisms should be in place to ensure that all crew members, not just officers, can report misconduct without fear of reprisal.
Companies that prioritise LGBTQ+ inclusive policies gain a competitive edge in recruiting and retaining seafarers. Younger generations, more open about their sexuality, seek workplaces where acceptance replaces discrimination. Cultivating a culture of acceptance for all can address staffing challenges and reshape the image of the shipping industry.
Initiatives supporting LGBTQ+ seafarers
The Pride in Maritime Network, established within Maritime UK's Diversity in Maritime program, launched Pride in Maritime Day in 2022. This initiative aims to identify barriers to change within the LGBTQ+ maritime community, encompassing shipping, ports, professional services, engineering, science, and leisure marine. It seeks to educate, empower, and support the LGBTQ+ community while sharing resources, policies, and toolkits across the sector.
I Exist Too, a charity dedicated to fighting for LGBTQ+ Seafarer rights, advocates for equal treatment, protection, and the creation of safe, inclusive work environments that eliminate discrimination and harassment. The maritime industry must take diversity, equity, and inclusion seriously. These principles are rooted in the experiences of individuals whose well-being has been compromised over time. Embracing LGBTQ+ individuals is not only crucial for the industry's progress but also for improving everyday lives on a personal level. Addressing these issues goes beyond retention numbers and staffing levels; it is a matter of basic humanity. By challenging stereotypes and biases, the industry can forge a path towards a more inclusive and accepting future, Captain Lee Clarke BSc (Hon) AFRIN, General Manager at Isle of Man Maritime.
