School pupils across Inverclyde are to be given the chance to name two new £17m ship-to-shore cranes ahead of their arrival at Greenock Ocean Terminal later this year.

Clydeport – part of the Peel Ports Group – is launching a competition in partnership with Inverclyde Council to find the most imaginative and creative names for the two cranes, which will become a vital piece of city infrastructure. Pupils from schools across the area are being invited to enter the competition ahead of the arrival of the cranes later this year.

Economic and employment opportunities

The purchase of the cranes is the largest single investment made at the container terminal since it opened in 1969 and, once installed, will boost productivity and efficiency at the port.

James McSporran, Director of Clydeport at Peel Ports Group, said: “The arrival of our new cranes later this year represents a really important milestone in the history of Clydeport. They will be key in future proofing the port, as well as helping us meet increased demand from cargo owners and fostering continued economic and employment opportunities in the Inverclyde area.

Shipbuilding and maritime heritage

This competition is a fantastic opportunity for the next generation to have a lasting impact on the local area"

As we look to the future, we wanted to involve the next generation in the naming process of our new cranes, which will form a part of the local skyline for many years to come. We are very much looking forward to hearing the ideas they come up with, and to announcing our winners later this year.”

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Inverclyde Council’s convener of education and communities, said: “This competition is a fantastic opportunity for the next generation to have a lasting impact on the local area. Inverclyde has a rich culture, including our shipbuilding and maritime heritage, which I’m sure all our entrants will draw on for inspiration when coming up with their ideas. I’m sure the competition will spark the imaginations of our young people and provide an excellent opportunity to become part of this piece of history at Greenock Ocean Terminal.”

New school supplies

Submissions will be due shortly after pupils return to school for the new term after summer with the winning entries set to be branded on each of the cranes.

The winning schoolchildren will be invited to attend the unveiling of the new cranes at the terminal and will also have their names added to a ceremonial plaque which will be displayed alongside the cranes. An additional donation of £500 from Clydeport will be made to the winning school to support the purchase of new school supplies.
