Cammell Laird was once again proud to continue its long tradition of supporting Armed Forces Week (AFW) by paying tribute to all those who serve their country today and the veterans who have served in the past. During AFW they also reflected on their own proud history of supporting the Armed Forces and the Royal Navy in particular, both during times of war and moving into the future.
David McGinley, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) - Cammell Laird Ship Repairers and Shipbuilders Ltd, Atlantic & Peninsula Marine Services Ltd, said: “Cammell Laird's commitment to the armed forces lies at the heart of our business and everything we do. We are immensely proud of our role in supporting the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary by maintaining their fleet here in the UK and whilst in operational theatre across the globe.”
Building and repairing vessels
David McGinley adds, “We are also proud to support those who have served in the armed forces. Cammell Laird is a welcome employer to ex-service men and women by helping them to develop a civilian career – one in which they can use the vital skills they have developed whilst serving in the armed forces. We also support those employees who continue to serve our country as Reservists, enabling them to have additional leave for training or mobilisations.”
He continues, “During AFW, we also showcased just some of those who have made the transition from military to civilian life and now work at Cammell Laird. The company played a key role in both World Wars by both building and repairing vessels. During World War II alone the shipyard produced nearly 200 commercial and military vessels in support of the UK war effort.”
Armed forces covenant
David McGinley further states, “We are equally proud that we have gone on to support the build of Astute Class Submarine on behalf of Bae Systems and manufactured a substantial part of Her Majesty’s QEC Class Aircraft Carriers on behalf of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance. Today we support the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) with its flotilla of vessels, which sustain our Naval Defence around the world.”
The company has further shown its support by signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant - a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
