Babcock LGE, the pioneer in liquefied gas solutions, is delighted to have a number of its customers’ ships featured on the Royal Institute of Naval Architects' (RINA) annual ‘Significant Ship of 2021’ list.

Making the prestigious list, which includes some of the very best in current ship design and construction, is the world’s first Chinese-built 99,000m3 Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) – the Pacific Ineos Belstaff.  LGE supplied the fully integrated cargo handling and fuel gas (ecoETHN™ technology) supply system onboard the vessel.

Very Large Ethane Carrier

Built at Jiangnan shipyard in China for shipowner Pacific Gas, the vessel is shipping ethane from the US. This is a substantial project for both LGE and Jiangnan as their first VLEC project and both look forward to the delivery of a further 7 VLECs in the future.

Captain Tao Yong, Vice President of Pacific Gas, said, “We are proud to have the world’s first 99,000m3 VLEC delivered and thereafter completed its maiden voyage successfully. I would like to thank Jiangnan shipyard and LGE, as without their support this would not have been possible."

Integrated cargo handling systems

Babcock LGE provides vessel lifetime post-delivery service as well as quick response troubleshooting on a 24/7/365 basis"

Tao Yong adds, “Babcock LGE, one of the leading makers for integrated cargo handling systems on gas carriers in the world provides vessel lifetime post delivery service, as well as quick response trouble shooting on a 24/7/365 basis whenever and wherever it is needed."

"Pacific Gas started our co-operation with LGE in 2014 on the Korean-built vessel 84,000m3 LPG carrier at Daewoo Shipyard (DSME) and we are happy to continue our partnership with LGE on the world’s first 99,000m3 VLEC."

More efficiency and less consumption

“The successful cargo operation proved that we made the right choice, especially on the cargo handling system and Fuel Gas Supply System which is integrated by LGE."

"LGE’s innovative technology achieved more efficiency and less consumption, which definitely helps the vessel to reduce CO2 emission and contributes positively to the environment,” concluded Tao Yong.

LGE solutions

Babcock LGE’s solutions allow improved performance while reducing operational costs and emission regulations"

Neale Campbell, Managing Director of Babcock LGE, said, “We are proud to have a number of our customers’ ships named on RINA’s ‘Significant Ship of 2021’ list – this is another significant milestone for the business."

Babcock LGE’s solutions are focused on future readying customers’ assets, allowing improved performance while reducing operational costs and meeting ever-tightening environmental and emission regulations.”

Innovative technology

The award-winning Babcock LGE team supplied innovative technology for a further three vessels to make the 2021 RINA list including:

  • Bellavista Explorer (Hull 8050) a 90,000m3 LPG carrier built for Trafigura at Hyundai Samho –LGE provided the LPG cargo handling system with Vent Gas Cooler (VGC™) technology and the recently commercialised Fuel Gas Supply System (ecoFGSS™),
  • Gas Gabriella (Hull 3141) – a 84,000m3 LPG carrier built for KSS at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) – LGE provided the LPG cargo handling system with VGC™ technology and,
  • Legacy (Hull 8287) – a 38,000m3 LPG carrier built for Nieto at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), LGE provided the LPG cargo handling system with VGC™ technology and Fuel Gas Supply System (ecoFGSS™).

Babcock LGE counts many of the shipowners and energy majors as customers each benefitting from LGE technologies via improved environmental efficiencies and reduced fuel consumption onboard their vessels, significantly contributing to their sustainability goals.

Net-zero transition

Babcock LGE recently won the Innovation award at the Maritime UK awards, acknowledging the company’s world-leading, environmentally focussed, and engineering-led cargo handling and fuel gas solutions to international shipyards and shipowners.

Looking to the future, Babcock LGE is committed to supporting the transition to net zero by developing solutions for zero-carbon fuel and CO2 shipping.
