In late April this year, the OCCS system installed on Evergreen's neopanamax container vessel successfully captured CO2 from its exhaust gas emissions. The captured CO2 was offloaded to a shore facility and was recycled.

ClassNK confirmed an amount of the offloaded CO2, and deducted the amount from the ship's annual CO2 emissions in CII assessment under the direction of the Flag Administration of the Panama Maritime Authority. This series of initiatives anticipates practical operations that may be widely conducted in the future to reduce GHG emissions and is the first case in the world. This is a significant step for the maritime industry to achieve Net-zero GHG emissions.

Role of each party

  • Panama Maritime Authority: Determination of the deduction of captured CO2 amount from OCCS system from annual CO2 emissions in CII assessment.
  • Evergreen: Installation/operation of OCCS system, and capture/offloading/ recycling of CO2.
  • Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute: Development of OCCS system and technical support for the operation.
  • ClassNK: Confirmation of compliance with safety requirements in accordance with the Guidelines for Shipboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems and the amount of offloaded CO2.

ClassNK is committed to supporting stakeholders' proactive initiatives toward decarbonization by providing appropriate standards and surveys as a third party.
